'Solo: A Star Wars Story' directed by Ron Howard

Image
Solo is a home run in my book. There are some things to get over and there is some weirdness, and some messiness, But in a lot of very awesome (dope as fuck) ways, its the star wars movie I've been wanting to see since Uncle George sold Star Wars into white slavery. That's just me, my opinion. What is Cannon? To me its the original Trilogy, the original cuts. That's it. Maybe you include the prequels, maybe you go by what Disney says it is this week. Maybe you include the old comics,  the supplemental visual guides the decades of novels cartoons etc. I spent a lot of time with the various roleplaying game supplements growing up. This movie kind of feels like Ron Howard took a big glob of the best of all of that stuff, plopped it on a spinning wheel and caressed it into a an amazing artifact. Ron Howard is a competent director, and maybe not the best or most exciting director, but I think he understands story, and he understands what was great about the original Star W...

'Deadpool 2' directed by David Leitch

Deadpool 2 is a piece of garbage made for idiots. I suppose it can be justified as a funny summer comic book action movie, and both Ryan Reynolds and this movie try so hard to come off as clever, but come on. If you really think this is funny, or clever you must be in a desperately stupid place in your life and I am a bit afraid for you. Its trying to come off as self aware but if it really were self aware it wouldn't exist. I actually read comics for a while as a teen, Cable being introduced as a character really felt like the beginning of the end of my interest in superhero comic books, and cable's intro in the Fox X-men movies feels very much the same. I stopped reading X-men shortly after they introduced Bishop, which is basically the same character as Cable. James Brolin is good in the role, but the whole movie is dumb as shit. Domino is a fun character played by Zazie Beats, Negasonic Teenage Warhead, and Colossus are really fun to see on screen, I wish they spent the m...

'Grace Jones: Bloodlight and Bami' directed by Sophie Fiennes

Image
What do I know about Grace Jones? Not a whole lot, but I remember as a kid seeing Conan the Destroyer on Showtime encountering the movie and this amazing and bizarre movie with this exotic woman who was scary, and looked like a man and was portrayed as a powerful warrior, primal in nature.  And then someone mentioned that some men find her very attractive because they want to tame this wild creature. And being a child I was just puzzled. But there were a lot of puzzling performers back then, like Andre the Giant, or Tiny Tim, Arnold Schwarzenegger, or DEVO. People you see on TV and go Woah! What the fuck is that? We saw a little more of Grace Jones in "View to a Kill" Bond movie and I thought that was the best movie I had ever seen, but every movie seemed like the best movie I had ever seen back then. She was definitely the most memorable Bond girl.  She was part of Pop Culture an intriguing postmodern absurdly comical tangent, who I was just not ready for, and who sort of ...

Bad Samaritan directed by Dean Devlin

I've been dealing with anxiety this last week. I have this feeling like my soul is bleeding. I had some interviews for the mid to long term career goal, and I went to two job fairs.  I'm trying to focus on what I can do, but I just feel oppressive weight like I need to do more, really I need to focus on short term goals right now.  At one of the job fairs there was a professional photographer taking headshots for your linkedin.com profile. To be fair I was a little tired, but I saw the pictures of myself, and oh my lord! These pictures murdered something in me. I looked like Frankenstein's monster and a depressed moose had a baby! I am in a very deep, but very familiar hole. I know I can get myself out of it, but still I feel like shit right now. I went and saw the first showing of Bad Samaritan, the Thursday 7:00 PM showing. I happened to walk into a meetup in the theater of people who had worked on the movie. They were way into it and were taking selfies together. I...

A Quiet Place directed by John Krasinski

Image
I have been interviewing and attending job fairs. Been feeling anxiety and while I wouldn't call it actual depression, I have been feeling rather emo, in a bad way in general. Not to be flippant regarding women's menstrual health. But I am feeling my man cycle real bad. Also feeling quite isolated and lonesome as a human, along with intense guilt for not having a job already. A growing part of me feels headed toward a cliff. Its not depression its self inflicted anguish and the desire to get out of this feeling. Trying to focus on what I can do.  I went to a job fair this morning and got back to the Starbucks by my place right when matinee's were starting so... A Quiet Place, its been in theaters a few weeks.  Its a horror movie with a gimmick.  John Krasinski directs and stars. John Krasinski is an actor I find boring. Remember in old Disney cartoons they would show average normal people they would draw people who looked like Goofy. Like dogpeople? Thats John Krasinsk...

Avengers: Infinity War directed by Anthony Russo and Joe Russo

Image
This movie is the most comic book movie ever, the most Marvel Comics movie of all time, a cinematic event!  It has so many characters split into at least three groups accomplishing goals all over the universe. The fight scenes are epic and relentless, the quips are directed squarely at adolescent brains, and we all have one of those. The enormous scale, the soap opera elements, the cliffhanger elements, all there. If you grew up reading Marvel comic books, then everything you remember dreaming about while reading comics and thinking what an amazing movie these stories would make is all here on screen. This movie isn't trying to win an academy award, its trying to win a no-prize. You can't look at this movie with the same expectations as other movies, if you applied the same conventions you would find faults, relationships under developed, things that don't make sense, but this is actually a genre defining movie, all built on what came before, its THE Marvel movie and ...

Paul, Apostle of Christ directed by Andrew Hyatt

Image
A slumber inducing non violent brodown about two authors of The Bible. I saw Passion of the Christ years ago on a row of TVs at a bar in San Francisco late with the sound off and subtitles on, and loud rock music playing. It still connected cinematically and even contextually slightly displaced, I thought it was a tremendous movie watching experience. This is no Passion of the Christ. The flick opened strong Jim Caviezel plays Luke dodging the roman popo in the era of Nero. It ushered the viewer into the mean streets of Roma, Christian corpses burned in the streets, Danger for the fledgling cult being persecuted. Any time a movie can pull you into a bygone historical era its a good sign. And the stuff early Christians had to deal with is rife with interesting conflict, stuff that might be well and truly interesting portrayed onscreen but in this turkey all that crap happens offscreen so they talk about what persecution is, rape, murder, being murdered by gladiators, in the Circ...
