'Incredibles 2' directed by Brad Bird

A great movie about a family. a great family movie about superheroes. As far as animation goes its not just the state of the art eye candy, the amount of thought and attention that shows up on screen is awe inspiring. The lighting, the sound, the set design, the character movement the camera movement and cinematography are next level. And the characters are well developed, the situations are relevant. This movie is an A plus. It is a cartoon, so I guess you do need to be up for that. Baby Jack Jack steals the movie,

'Alpha' directed by Albert Hughes

I liked this movie. Its a cave man movie about a boy and his dog. Man and dog vs. Nature. I can imagine this movie  doing well in countries that don't speak English. Kodi Smit-Mcphee plays Keda, a young member of a primitive tribe who gets gored and flung off a cliff only to be left for dead by his tribe on his first hunt. He wakes up from a coma alone and bonds with a wolf and together they struggle to get back to his tribal home. Its good. I love a good cave man movie. This would be a good movie to watch highly medicated. Its shot well, its simple enough to understand whats happening and its compelling. Stories about resourceful young people who learn to survive in the woods have a special place in my heart.

'Kin' directed by Jonathan Baker, Josh Baker

I thought I finished my movie review dump last night but I remembered I saw a few other movies in August that I forgot to review. Kin is a weird one. Its a movie about a kid named Eli from Detroit played by Miles Truitt who finds a weapon from the future. Then he and his older criminal brother Jimmy go on a road trip to run away from gangster James Franco. They have a very predictable road adventure, they meet and befriend a stereotype stripper played by Zoe Kravitz. They get where they are heading and then impossible shit that doesn't make sense and is never explained happens. The kid is ok. The future tech gun is slightly interesting. Not enough to carry the movie. Seemed like the older brother went to the Jensen Ackles Acting Academy. Zoe Kravitz plays a stripper in a PG-13 movie. James Franco can't save it. Michael B Jordan showing up at the end doesn't make up for the two hours you just spent watching it. I couldn't recommend it in theaters, but as some

'Ralph Breaks the Internet' directed by Phil Johnston, Rich Moore

Image
Wreck it Ralph was totally delightful. I didn't actually see the original movie in the theater or even the proper way streaming I watched a playlist on youtube that strung together clips of the movie in various languages and with a lot of overlap I basically put together in my mind. Who doesn't love Vanelope Von Schweet? its just a cute name. Its concept is a lot like the old cartoons where all the toys in the toy store come alive at night and play when the owner is away. Well in this its all the videogame characters have a secret life while the arcade owner is away. Ralph is a Donkey Kongesque videogame bad guy who is actually good.  Vanelope is the glitchy secret spunky character in a cutesy candy kart racer game. The first one was all cohesive and made sense within its story it had all the fun old school arcade game references. IT was just a lot of fun. This one is okay. but in this one they travel to the internet to buy a part for Vanelope's videogame. and all the

'Creed II' directed by Steven Caple Jr.

Image
I'm a sucker for Rocky movies. I have seen them all multiple times. The first Creed really captured  the heart and spirit of the original Rocky, and Creed II moves things more toward the perfected formulaic shlock of the Rocky sequels, and I loved every minute of it. Michael B Jordan as Adonis Creed. What a physique on this guy. Adonis is the right name for this character. Shredded, The guys personal trainer need to win an award. Roy Jones Jr would still win in the ring but I'm wondering if Sly didn't slip him some HGH to get ready for that epic training montage. If you saw the trailer you know the story. Ivan Drago's son Victor comes looking for blood after Rocky Disgraced the Drago Family all those years ago. All the old favorite villains are back and badder than ever. Its a shame they couldn't get Hulk Hogan and Mr T. (Side note: I would love a reality TV show that was just Mr T hanging out with Mike Tyson.) Its totally manipulative, but these Rocky movi

'Widows' directed by Steve McQueen

Image
Widows is a star vehicle for Viola Davis. Its a  heist movie like the movie Heat, but for women. I was down for that.  And it was really good. Its got an all star cast, or at least a cast that should all be stars. and only a few problems. Its worth watching and its a good time at the movies. Alright the movie really relies on plot, to the point where talking about it at all brings up potential spoilers, but the strength of the film is in the characters. Can Viola Davis carry a movie, yes! Yes she can. Michelle Rodriguez plays the same character she's played in every movie a short tempered snarl prone latina. Elizabeth Debicki the hotty from the Night Manager miniseries gets a real beefier role here, but comes off as a bit of a lightweight. Cynthia Erivo and Viola hold it down though. We have a B plot that feels more grounded and makes more sense a lot of the time in the father son relationship between Robert Duvall and Collin Farrell as corrupt political family in Chicago. T

'Bohemian Rhapsody' directed by Bryan Singer, Dexter Fletcher (uncredited)

Image
Is this the real life? Is this just fantasy? Ah Queen, Freddie Mercury, truly one of the all time great artists in the rock music pantheon. A legend. Bohemian Rhapsody the movie is a lot of fun. Rami Malek nails it in his version of Freddie as much as anyone could. The other actors who play members of Queen nail it as well especially Gwilym Lee as Brian May.  Rami Malek is a bit skinny and he's an actor with enormous eyes playing someone with an enormous jaw but he's got the spirit and the essence and the moves down completely. Its a story of the rise of the band and their trials, tribulations and victories as rock gods. And the story of the struggle Freddie had with being gay. and of course being taken from the world too soon dying of AIDS. The AIDS stuff worked, the band stuff worked, the gay stuff was a mixed bag. Its all based on a true story but it just wasn't that interesting to me the who why and how of Freddie's love life. Maybe that's why he didn't

'A Star is Born' directed by Bradley Cooper

Image
I enjoyed it. It reminded me of the distant memory I have of the Kris Kristofferson Barbara Streisand version. Lots of singing, I enjoyed the behind the scenes of stardom feelings. Its about addiction and codependency, love and loss, success and failure. Lots of high stakes changes for the characters and tragic consequences. Its beautiful. Lady Gaga can sing and Bradley Cooper can act like Kris Kristoferson. Great character performances from Andrew Dice Clay as Gaga's Papa, and a very compelling performance from Sam Neil as Bradley Cooper's much older brother. I saw this movie with my aunt and we both totally enjoyed it. Its a Musical but its not, Its emotional but its simple to understand. Its a good time at the movies. Lots of lens flares, Too many lens flares. Its uplifting in that it really hammers home how cliche suicide is. You will want to buy a doodle. It will win all the Oscars

'Venom' directed by Ruben Fleischer

Image
Venom is not a good movie but it has some strong elements going for it. Primarily a strong lead actor in one Tom Hardy. He's a really interesting dude to watch on screen like Brando or James Dean. Unfortunately he's like Brando or James Dean in a shitty cliched superhero movie. Its the same formulaic sack of shit videogame looking superhero shit you've seen a million times. But its got Tom Hardy hamming it up as both ace reporter Eddie Brock and as the voice of the C.G. inky blob alien symbiote. The Iago type character whispering in Eddie's ear known as Venom. Venom is a popular character from the Spider-man comics and because of corporate shortsightedness and a Marvel Comics bankruptcy in the 1990s all the film rights to all the spider-man characters belong to Sony Pictures studio. Marvel studios doesn't want to share Spidey right now so now the thing that looks like a combo of spider-man and the HR Giger's xenomorph now has no connection to Peter Parker in

'Sorry to Bother You' directed by Boots Riley

Image
I considered not reviewing this because I interact with lots of people in the background of this movie on a somewhat normal basis. I'm biased in this movie's favor. I even sell stuff over the phone all day! The movie is shot at bars I went to pretty much all the time growing up and living in the Bay Area till 5 years ago. And I'm proud of everyone in it for representing the Bay Area, and its so nice to see the comedy community on screen even just as background performers and cameos its just really cool. Its so dope to see Steven Yeun from the walking dead drinking in the Layover. How many birthday parties and comedy shows have you been to there? Sorry to Bother You is just a straight up recommend. The only criticism I have is that the pacing is a little unusual. I like it, but its paced more like a foreign film. Its a surrealist take on working life and selling out to succeed. Its funny social commentary, its well done, well acted. Its great to see a truly diverse cast s

'White Boy Rick' directed by Yann Demange

Image
White Boy Rick is a hidden gem. Crime movies are a tough sell for me because they come off as all the same. Lesser versions of Goodfellas. Its hard to get excited about a Matthew McConaughey movie because it seems like there are so many of them. I've never seen him be bad in a movie but he's so available. This is an actors movie set in the 80's and its actually a believable 1980s setting. Its Detroit in the 80s its cold its grimey. its everyday dangerous and its a true story about a family. And its a fucked up story about a family betrayed. The kid who plays Rick is named Richie Merritt and hes gives a very believable performance his story along with his relationship with the dad played by McConaughey feels very alive real and dark. I think the standout performance is from Bel Powley as Dawn the drug addict sister. She's amazing and in real life she's British. I guess that's only a shock if you've seen the movie and I don't think a lot of people did

'The Predator' directed by Shane Black

Image
This movie is really bad. I really wasn't asking much and it disappointed. Shane Black directed Kiss Kiss Bang Bang and that was a great movie. He should be able to handle this material. He wrote and acted in the original Predator. They brought him on to direct and what could be more in Shane Black's wheelhouse. It should have been a cinch. They got a fun enough cast, Keegan Michael Key, Olivia Munn and Thomas Jane are in it. I like all those people. This movie should have been way better. It sucked so badly. It underestimates the intelligence of the prepubescent audience its going for. Literally a 10 year old would write much better dialog. The characters are shit, the plot is shit, the effects are sub par/shit. It comes across as forced, its preposterously lame. It ridicules the mentally ill. Its so not clever. Its a bore. Predator 1 and 2 are both amazing movies. That Adrien Brody movie was dope. This is your reboot? Its a mess. Its an alien abortion. just avoi

'Mission: Impossible - Fallout' directed by Christopher McQuarrie

Image
Tom Cruise, the last real movie star, really scraps for it in this one. Is this movie good? For what it is, its great. But in your heart you know you have seen this before. Many times. Its great, but its a bunch of smart, capable people making a movie for dummies, and that's awesome in a way, but its like capability porn. They are selling me the fantasy of being a capable person and that makes me feel way more uncomfortable than actual porn. Even strange porn. Tom Cruise jumps off a thing and actually hurt his foot. ...In real life. Tom Cruise must be a bigger Jackie Chan fan than I am. But Jackie is old now and Tom Cruise is up for it. No women will ever really know or love Tom Cruise deep down, or at least they won't be able to appreciate who he is really. so why not spend one's life improving and self actualizing every day. I think that's what this movie is really about and I relate to that. I think that's the real reason to enjoy this movie. Henry Cavil

Moviepass is Dead! Long Live Sinemia! + A Long Overdue Movie Review Strike Roundup

Image
So Its been a while since I reviewed a movie. I have been so focused on other things passing tests and struggling with new jobs, entering new fields and keeping my head above that I shut this blog off. The last review I did was back in July. and its mid December now. I have been seeing movies and feeling like even though I watched them they feel half digested. How to explain... Moviepass. blame moviepass. When it crapped out in August the flow of being able to see any movie was interrupted. When I can see any movie any time seeing movies feels less special unless you can think and talk about them. thats kinda why I started the blog. Moviepass became unusable. They give you access to two showings of a rotating random movie option. They won't let you see new releases that are too popular, and  of course those are the ones I wanted to see, so I dumped them and I bought into Sinemia. Sinemia is a lot like Movie pass, but you can only use it for three showings a month. one of th
